Percussion Ensemble Consortium

Join The Wildlight Collective in the Commission of a new large work:
 Malicious Ignorance
A collection of pieces written for the collective, Malicious Ignorance explores the extents humans are willing to go, considering just that. The project explores political themes through electroacoustic means, often blending ugly concepts with driving and accessible sounds. Lastly, inspired by The Wildlight Collective's ever-changing personnel, the consortium plans to create multiple pieces of varying sizes of ensemble.

Meet the Consortium Leaders

The Wildlight Collective, founded by Michael Calamas, William Newton, and Chris Amick, is a vibrant community of percussionists scattered across the East Coast of the United States. Members bring diverse experiences, many having earned their degrees from respected institutions such as the University of South Carolina, Florida State University, Shenandoah Conservatory, and the Eastman School of Music with some members winning University faculty and performance positions.

Going beyond the stage, The Wildlight Collective is deeply committed to exploring new possibilities within percussion. They record and commission fresh compositions, actively promoting the work of contemporary composers who enrich our repertoire with their unique voices. This commitment extends to the sister platform, Wildlight Publications, a space dedicated to nurturing the growth of new compositions and fostering a collaborative musical community.

The Wildlight Collective takes pride in our role as stewards of percussion music, honoring its roots while actively contributing to its evolution and pushing the craft.

Meet the Composer

Ben Hausman (they/he) is a percussionist and composer based in the Maryland area. As both an active composer and performer, Ben works closely with electronics, heavily involving themselves with electroacoustic music, using both live electronic and fixed media. Constantly "plugged in" Ben is always finding the next distorted sound found through sampling obscure sounds.

Outside of solo work, Ben is a part of Matchstick Percussion, a Maryland/D.C. based percussion quartet set to ignite creativity, celebrate inclusivity, and transform percussion repertoire. With Matchstick, Ben has had the chance to perform alongside renowned ensembles such as the 21st Century Consort, So Percussion, and Sandbox Percussion.

Having studied with Gene Koshinski, Tim Broscious, Michelle Humphreys, Frank Russo, Jon Seligman, and Will Redman, they hold a M.M from University of Delaware and a B.M in Percussion Performance from Towson University. Outside of music Ben enjoys story telling, filmmaking, table-top board games, and chasing around their cat Mystic.
